IT LOOKS like the large-headed aliens depicted in a 1950s science fiction, but many people claim this is a genuine extraterrestrial body found in a desert.

Is this the corpse of an actual extraterrestrial being found on Earth?

The 15cm "body" was said to have been found in a remote town in the Atacama Desert in Chile, South America, and has just 10 ribs instead of the regular 12.

It is known as the Atacama Humanoid and has a cranium three times relatively larger than a human.

Many claim it to be a clever hoax, but 14 years after its discovery in 2003, fierce debate still rages about what it is.

Dr Steven Greer, an alien conspiracy theorist who claims to have worked with the French Ministry of Defence on UFOs, and that the technology for costless energy provided by extraterrestrials is being sir pressed by world leaders.

Dr Greer, founder of the Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence and the Disclosure Project, is one of the biggest advocates of it being real and not human.

He produced the documentary Sirius which claimed to prove it was a genuine dead body, and not human.

He said: "The CAT scan clearly shows internal chest organs -lungs and what appears to be the remains of a heart structure.

"There is absolutely no doubt that the specimen is an actual organism and that it is not a hoax of any kind. This fact has been confirmed by Dr Gary Nolan and Dr Ralph Lachman at Stanford."

Dr Nolan, a professor of microbiology and immunology, said: “It is quite clear that this is a real sample, this is a real specimen, this is not something somebody glued together.”

But, although Dr Nolan concluded it was a real corpse, he believes it is that of a human child.

Dr Nolan was allowed to examine the skeleton after contacting Dr Greer and worked with Dr Ralph Lachman, clinical professor of paediatric radiology and a specialist in dwarfism, who runs the International Skeletal Dysplasia Registry.

Dr Nolan put DNA from the corpse through an analyser, which found the specimen to have human DNA.

But, the professors were still unable to explain the missing ribs, and the fact that its size was of a 22-week-old foetus, but it had the levels of calcification in the legs of a child aged five to eight years.

They believe that the child may have suffered from dwarfism, or other mutations, and that calcification could have increased through natural mummification of the body.

Dr Lachman told stanforddaily.com: “The mummification process in the Egyptians has produced calcification like this in the intervertebral spaces.

“Natural mummification is probably a process that occurs if you in a very dry desert place. The body is lying there for several years, and it dries out and salts are deposited. That can lead to calcification occurring.”

Dr Greer believes there are still anomalies that mean it may not be human.

He said: "we have to be careful proclaiming it one thing or another as we still don't know - despite the medias claim that the 'mystery has been solved and it is just human and there is no mystery here'.

Meet Jaglion, the offspring between a male jaguar and a female lion

"It could be years before we get an answer on this."

UFO investigator JP Robinson says that there have been other similar discoveries in Chile and Puerto Rico.

He said: "Another has already been found in the late 1990s in Russia, which was believed to be more mature than the Atacama humanoid despite being of a similar height and ratio.

"Could these incredible discoveries eventually lead to the discovery of another race of humanoids from our distant past?

"Just as giants have occupied our imaginations since time immemorial, what could these miniature human figures tell us about our forgotten past?

"Only time and more thorough scientific research will reveal the answers to these incredible mysteries.

"Could they have extraterrestrial connections or are the answers going to be as baffling as the specimens themselves?"
