Maths teaching assistant who had sex with teenage student with learning difficulties caged
Christine Towers, 26, pleaded guilty to institutional sexual assault and it was revealed she had sex with the teen four times.
The 16-year-old boy is now in therapy because of the relationship and Judge Patrick Carmody revealed he was “mostly confused” by the situation.
If you were a male and it was a 16-year-old female, people would be outraged and screaming for blood
Towers will be imprisoned for between 11 and 23 months and have to register as a sex offender upon release.
Judge Carmody, addressed Towers and said: “If you were a male and it was a 16-year-old female, people would be outraged and screaming for blood.
Headmaster of Hartsdown Academy Margate Matthew Tate appeared on This Morning alongside mother Latasha Whiting
"You threw a lot away here and made a lot of wrong decisions that resulted in someone being traumatised.”
Towers taught maths and sport at a school near Philadelphia in America. The court heard she took the boy, who she was tutoring, out for food and on trips to the local shopping centre.
The victim told detectives: “She made me think I was her everything and she would go crazy if I left her, I cooperated with the detectives because I saw it as a way out."
The mother described the “devastation” Towers brought upon the family from the abuse and how tough the teen had found it to recover.
She said: “Everyday is a struggle in our home.”
Fellow students have been mocking the boy, according to Philly.com, accusing him of being “a teacher’s pet.” He has even had to quit the school basketball team.
In a statement from her lawyer, Towers apologised to the boy and his family, claiming she has “gravely” learnt her lesson. She said: “I want to deeply apologise for my actions.”
